Leaning into the role of a Consultant, one year in

It’s not just about solving tasks — it’s about seeing the bigger picture”.

— Peter Riis Christiansen, Consultant

One year ago, Peter transitioned from Tech Analyst to a full-time Consultant at NORTH. This move deepened his involvement in projects and broadened his understanding of the consulting world – not just from a technical perspective, but also with a growing interest in the business and management side. In this article, Peter reflects on this increased responsibility, the benefits of an engineering mindset in consulting, and how he’s shaping his future development.

Stepping into a role with more responsibility

“At NORTH, the things you do as an Analyst are in many ways the same as what you do as a Consultant – but because it's full-time, you’re more deeply embedded.  That means more time, more responsibility, and greater exposure to the big picture. You often have to align with a broader set of internal and external stakeholders, making sure everyone’s on the same page and working together in the same direction. It’s collaborative – and very much living up to the expectations I had of the consulting role".

"You often hear that consulting means long hours and heavy workloads, but in my experience, it’s been challenging without being overwhelming. That balance was exactly what I looked for from NORTH and experiencing it firsthand has given me a more realistic understanding of the pace and expectations, and what sustainable challenges can look like in this field".

Bridging tech & business: A growing strategic mindset

“What drew me to NORTH in the first place was the mix of tech and business. Given my background, the tech side has always been the most interesting to me. But since the tech and management aspects of the projects are so closely connected, I’ve come to understand what things like “business,” “commercial thinking,” “value creation” and “project management” actually mean in practice. Because they’re the most challenging for me, I want to take on more of those types of tasks. They’re not what I specialised in during my studies, which makes them even more valuable to learn”.

Applying an engineering mindset to Management Consulting

“What has helped me in bridging that gap between my technical background and the management perspective of my work is probably a kind of logical thinking – or maybe you could call it an engineering mindset. Even when I am working on something that is less technical, that way of thinking still applies. It’s about making structured plans, managing time effectively, and building in enough flexibility for things to go off track without everything falling apart".

"Being able to juggle many moving parts and think through step by step has been useful, especially as I take on more of the business and project management tasks that I’m still learning. It’s not IT consulting in the traditional sense, where the focus can sometimes be more about delivering exactly what is asked for. At NORTH we aim to act more as advisors, helping the client find the right solution, even if it’s not what they initially expected. Having a tech perspective is a real asset. It’s a tool I can bring into the conversation, but it’s just as important to understand its limits and know when it actually fits the problem we’re trying to solve."

Looking ahead: Deepening commercial skills

“Hopefully I’ll get to dive even deeper into the commercial side of things, since that has become a bigger interest. I enjoy juggling multiple things at once, bringing out the best in people, and making sure we use the resources we have to achieve the strongest possible outcome".

"As I develop my commercial skills, I want to build a stronger foundation for working on things like implementations, or whatever the task might be, in a way that truly fits the needs of the business. Because it’s one thing to just do what you are told; it’s another to understand what makes sense and why”.

Peter’s journey illustrates how technical expertise can be a powerful foundation for a broader consulting career. As he continues to grow, his ability to combine structure with strategic thinking is proving to be a valuable asset – both for clients and for NORTH.
